We heard it before we saw it. The earthy, percussive tones of a didgeridoo kicking in to life from within the main hall of Montague Continuing Education Centre.
Cameron, a student of the school and master of the instrument, warmed up and set the tone as young people from across Melbourne, their teachers and their families filtered in to await the start of the Melbourne CBD Regional Award Ceremony.
The sense of excitement and pride in the room was palpable even before the didgeridoo called for the Ceremony to begin. As Mrs Robyn Baillieu (our VIP presenter) arrived, the atmosphere was one of anticipation, celebration and the feeling that each and every one of the young people being awarded was a VIP in their own right.
One by one, the young people from Montague Continuing Education Centre, Fitona Girls’ School, Noble Park Secondary College, Xavier College, The Mac.Robertson Girl’s High School and Yooralla Day Services (Eastern Region) shared their experiences and received their Awards from Mrs Baillieu in front of their peers.
We heard from Dhanya, whose wit and sense of timing in describing her advance from the Rainbow Trout to Snapper swimming groups was only eclipsed by her willingness to step outside of her comfort zone and give it a go. Or Jalal and Samuel, who spoke eloquently about their experiences and illustrated their achievements through a photo slideshow. Or Gabriel, who firmly believes that the best thing about The Duke of Ed is that you get to choose activities that are your interests, your passions, your dreams.
We’d like to extend a warm thank you to Mrs Robyn Baillieu for taking the time to be part of the Ceremony and be part of an important moment in the lives of some outstanding young Victorians. Your presence, thoughtful insights and humorous anecdotes (always remember to fill in the Record Book!) were appreciated.
To the young people who received their Award and the teachers, families and volunteers who have helped them through: we say a heartfelt thank you. Your commitment, enthusiasm, humour, resilience and sense of adventure all drive our belief in the boundless capacity of young people. You are an inspiration!
